MOZMED Project Niassa

The MOZMED Project in the Niassa Province was started at the end of 2019 in the Niassa National Reserve, in collaboration with the Chuilexi Conservancy and Ambassador Aviation. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions of movement, the project was temporarily halted in 2020. We anticipate the continuation of this project as soon as the situation has normalised.

As with the previous MOZMED projects in Moma and Gurúè, MOZMED Niassa is a project run by «Missão Betesda em Moçambique» in collaboration with Ambassador Aviation Lda. (former MAF Mozambique). Ambassador Aviation is supported by Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF-USA) and has been present in the country since the nineties with a team of pilots/mechanics and a couple of Cessna aeroplanes. At present, Ambassador Aviation flies with a Cessna 206 and a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX. With the arrival of the Cessna 208, Ambassador Aviation is able to transport more passenger and freight.

The MOZMED Project in Niassa was developed and realised in close consultation with the Niassa Provincial Health Authorities. The project is being carried out in a remote part of the Reserve with little or no health care. The MOZMED team strives to support the local communities living and working in the area with medical health care, using either existing health centres or mobile clinics. The team has been granted permission by the Provincial Health Authorities to refer and transport patients, in need of further medical care, to the Nampula Central Hospital. After the appropriate treatment the patients return to their home village on one of the MOZMED flights, operated by Ambassador Aviation.

MOZMED Niassa is active in the Gomba, Nualala and Ervuka communities, within the Mecula District. Besides medical and dental consultations, the MOZMED team, together with trained voluntary workers, disseminates health information amongst the local communities, using various methods. MOZMED Niassa receives financial, as well as logistical support from the Chuilexi Conservancy. This form of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is a good example of collaboration between the corporate sector and development aid.
